TOP

Order Charadriiformes - Plovers, Sandpipers, Gulls, Terns, Auks
Family Alcidae - Auks, Murres, Puffins, Guillemots

Charadriiforms are a diverse group of shore and aquatic or wading or terrestrial birds. They include the sandgrouse, shore birds, gulls and terns, and alcids. The majority breed in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Tree of Life includes shorebirds with the Ciconiiformes.
Auks are divers with palmate feet. They use their wings for power when swimming. They spend most of their time at sea and remain well offshore when not breeding. Their bill is compressed but variously shaped. They are characteristic of Northern seas.

        OCCURRENCE? - Accidental
            PELAGIC

Atlantic Puffins are solitary at sea and are seldom seen on land except around nest burrows. The large, compressed, triangular bill with contrasting orange and black and a white face is distinctive. They breed on the coasts of Northern Europe, Iceland, and eastern North America from within the Arctic Circle south to Maine and northern France.
Gull Island

Gull Island, Witless Bay, NF. Puffin burrows are located at the base of the green tufts of vegetation above the cliff. Kittiwakes are visible on the the slope.

NOTES:
   Avendex: No records.
Potter: Puffins are regular offshore south to Virginia and rarely to the Outer Banks.

  ●  Hypothetical.

Banner - Gull Island, Newfoundland. Kittiwakes visible (puffins could be sitting by their burrows?)...
