  Order Columbiformes - Columbiforms
Family Columbidae - Pigeons and Doves

Columbiforms include two groups: the extinct Dodo and solitaire and modern pigeons and doves.
Pigeons and Doves are compact with short necks and small heads. They bob their head as they walk. The bill is slender and may be constricted in the middle. Nostrils are found within a fleshy cere. Many feed their young a crop secretion ("crop milk"). Most are able to suck water from a puddle rather than depend passively on gravity when they drink.
Pigeons (Columba) have rapid flight and are often seen in flocks.

        OCCURRENCE? - Accidental
            MOUNTAIN FORESTS, LOWLANDS, SUBURBS

The Band-tailed Pigeon is a bit larger than the Rock Dove. They are colored in shades of gray. Adults have a dark eye and yellow bill and tail. Their voice is an owl-like hooting. Their wings produce a loud clapping on take-off. They live in temperate and mountain forests, primarily in oaks and locally in lowlands. They are becoming increasingly common in wooded suburbs in the Pacific coastal region.
