Western Gull, Larus occidentalis |
Western Gulls, Larus occidentalis, and Heermann's Gulls, Larus heermanni, are common along the west coast. The California Gull, Larus californicus, breeds in the interior and winters on the coast. California Gulls resemble the Western Gull but have a lighter mantle, a dark iris, and streaks on the nape. The bill has black and red marks behind a yellow tip.
These pictures were taken on the Monterey peninsula along the central California coast. |
