SUBORDER NEORNITHES - "True Birds"                                                                                                       Wiki     ToL
Ratites and "modern birds" placed outside the Order Passeriformes (roughly half of our known modern birds) are collectively are known as "non-passerines." All birds that belong to the Order Passeriformes are known as "passerines."

INFRAORDER PALEOGNATHAE (EOAVES) -  "Ratites"                                                                                                     Wiki     ToL
Medium to very large flightless or nearly flightless birds lacking a "keel" (a ventral crest of bone on the sternum that anchors the major flight muscles). They are said to be "ratite" where other birds are "carinate." These are isolated descendents of an early large terrestrial radiation of birds with a primitive palate - separated by continental drift.
